Lessons I’ve learned in 2020

This year has been an eye-opener for me, I’ve learned so much about myself, society, and others. There are things that have now become extremely important to me. I’ve also learned so much about business since launching my clothing label in the summer, my life purpose, friendships, and relationships.

With that being said, it was only right that I reflected on what I’ve learned, and here are a few key things I’ve learnt this year so far and will be aware of going forward into the new year.

Patience is key: Given the current climate, I think we have all had to practice patience in some way this year. As for me, I am a very impatient person, I want things to change now and I want things perfect. But this year I have truly had to practice patience. I’ve realised how much beauty there is in the process. Sometimes we try to rush through life, rush into relationships, force connections, and completely rush our life process. But I’ve understood that we cannot cultivate healthy connections, bonds, and habits if we are always trying to rush this process. I’ve learnt the importance of slowing down, focusing on my intentions, being completely authentic, and consistently reminding myself of my wants and needs.

Don’t let pride get in your way: This is the one. One thing I’ve made sure to do this year is to tell people how I feel about them. If people are good for you tell them, if you love and appreciate them, show them. This year was super morbid at times but it reminded me of the importance of being vulnerable and honest with the people you care about and who are good to you. Don’t let pride stop you from telling people you love them and are grateful for them especially given the unpredictable events of this year.

Always follow your instincts: This is extremely important, sometimes we don’t realise how much you ignoring your instinct can lead you down the same path year after year. This year I learnt that I continued in a similar toxic cycle simply because I didn’t follow my instincts, my poor self-trust led me down the same path. This is something I refuse to put myself through again. You know yourself more than anybody, if something doesn’t sit right with you then your inner voice is probably telling you to take action and stop ignoring signs. Doing the same thing leads to the same results. I have been there before and there’s no going back, trust yourself first. Do what you know and feel is right – you’ll thank yourself for it later when you realise that you were right all along.

Life is unpredictable: Truly. The events of the year have shown me that we honestly can’t predict every event in life and many things are outside of our control. For someone like myself who’s a complete control freak, this is an important lesson. I have to accept that this unpredictability is part of life and to navigate around these unexpected changes, do my best to remain positive, regroup and figure out my next moves whilst focusing on what I CAN control.

Get your health right: Again, the events of this year have shown me how important it is to take my health seriously. And I can officially say I’ve become a health enthusiast although I’ve still got a lot to learn. Either way, next year make sure to exercise, take your vitamins, drink your water, detox regularly, and mind your business. Take it seriously – wake up a little earlier and get a quick workout in. Switch your juices with lemon-infused water. Watch your red meat, dairy, and sugar intake. Slowly cut down your bad eating habits, start small, start daily, start somewhere.

Freedom is a must: It’s not fulfilling to spend your life doing work you don’t like and doesn’t align with who you are. When I started my job last December, I hated it (to be straight). It took a toll on me both mentally and emotionally because It was simply to pay my bills and my side hustle. But then I was furloughed for 5 months. I was able to get so much done, this time gave me the freedom to focus on what aligns and fulfills me. To name a few, I was able to launch my business, improve my sewing skills, start a YouTube channel, and become more spiritually aligned. As a Sagittarius I’m a freedom seeker, I don’t like restrictions, I have multiple interests and the ultimate freedom to tap into all my layers is the goal. This year reminded me that I need to do everything I can to live the life I want. However, I am grateful that I do have a job, I’m able to save and pay my bills for the time being.
